What students will learn: · The unique quality and history of charcoal. · How to create a neutral ground to work over. · Exercises to loosen up and not worry about what others are doing. · The whole range of marks that charcoal can produce. · How to perceive and focus on rendering Values. Prerequisites Beginners are welcome as well as people with some experience who want to learn more. Supplies: What you will need to bring with you: · Box of willow charcoal (one box can be shared with everyone). · Putty erasers. · Workable fixative to seal the drawings. · Paper towels. · Old brushes to blend and lift the charcoal with. Paper · Strathmore Bristol, Vellum surface, 300 Series, 100 lbs · Strathmore Heavyweight drawing surface, 400 Series, 100 lbs – 18" x 24" if possible. Other supplies you may want to bring: · People could bring their own paper (sheets or sketchbooks) if they like. · Some students might like to bring their own gloves. · Your own packed lunch. There is a great Cafe on Site. It would also be very helpful to have some objects for the beginning students to draw: simple, stationary items such as fruit or vegetables, a mug and glasses. For more advanced students: glass bottles, driftwood or an old typewriter, drapery, a vase of flowers or anything that would make an interesting still life arrangement. In both cases, I really like the students to “work big”, so larger sizes would be best. Members: Current members will receive 5% discount on this workshop. Please use your membership number in PROMO code for this discount when registering on-line. · The importance of Observation.
