100 Plates
6 Dec 2014 - 4 Jan 2015

You don't have to be a potter to take part. Think about the plate in any medium you like, collage, mixed media, crochet, knitted, paper mache, sticks and found objects. Your imagination can just go wild. I will install the plates on the walls and on plinths like a giant installation whereby the individual also becomes integrated in the whole. The visual impact of the 100 plates, removes the concept of the plate as a functional item and elevates it to an artwork.

Carolyn Annand                              Tui Gallery
A variety of subject matter and techniques is a constant in my artworks. This approach is driven by my desire to explore new media, bringing life to previously undiscovered textures and expressing my love of the creative process. Inspired to further examine the relationship between colour, texture & form, I am taken on a new, untraveled journey each time I paint. This exhibition kicks off a study of human habitation inspired by my English Village Heritage, where I spent my childhood, and the New Zealand suburban and rural landscapes.
Celia Man
This exhibition is the result of my adoration of unusual media. I love to combine gels, pastes, inks, acrylics, papers, heavy-body paints and stencils to produce works rich in texture. My inspiration is often drawn from random found objects. And my pieces can include almost anything from Bible pages to nuts and bolts. I am constantly captivated by the results attained by altered techniques and happy accidents. I like to think that “Art is not a thing; it is an Expedition.

Jim White-Parsons                                          Kowhai Gallery

New paintings by Jim whose love of NZ scenes comes alive through the skilled use of watercolour.
I try to keep my colour palette simple and also leave plenty of contrast between light and shade.  When I select a subject to paint, usually using one of our photo's as reference, I spend quite a lot of time sketching out a satisfactory composition, shifting trees, buildings and mountains, if necessary, to find the best focal point.  I also try to leave something for the viewers imagination.

Jewel Lynam                                                                      Tui Gallery

Jewel's acrylic paintings convey freedom of thought and expression in very articulate visual terms. Strong colour and lines are offset by soft subtle shadings, often showing symbols, figures and faces disguised within the paintings. This forces the viewer to examine them at varying distances or angles.

The exhibition is called “Two new lives” because both emigrated to NZ and now call this beautiful country home. Extremely talented quilters who work “outside of the square”, their quilts are more like artworks, with nuances of detailed patterns and colours. Both artists have exhibited internationally and were both selected NZ quilters representing NZ quilt making.
