October 2016
National NZ Mosaic Art Exhibition/ competition / Symposium
30 September - 23 October
For the month of October Estuary Arts was host to the 5th National Mosaic exhibition. Established artists work will feature among works by new and emerging enthusiasts and entrants featuring flat wall pieces and sculptural items. Despite Mosaics having been around for thousands of years, there has been some debate over the years as to where it fits in, in terms of art or craft.
Gradually throughout the years, its recognition as an art form is increasing and more and more galleries are embracing it as an art form in all its intricacies. None have been more instrumental in this recognition within New Zealand than an initially small group of enthusiasts who started holding National exhibitions back in 2011. Since then the groundswell of people involved in mosaic art within New Zealand seems to get more adventurous and inspiring at each exhibition offering an opportunity for those new to the art and experienced artists to learn, meet and share thoughts and enthusiasm with others.

Elaine Swannepoel Hibiscus Gallery
05 March - 3 April
Elaine “discovered” her artistic side about ten years ago when a friend invited her to fabric paint classes. After mastering painting on fabric Elaine started to explore other options and today loves acrylic paint on canvas as well as incorporating different mediums into her art. Elaine draws inspiration from the creative work of so many talented artists, from our wonderful world of beautiful colours and her love for animals. “Never a dull moment” – that is how she describes having a paint brush in her hand, even black and grey can just make a painting pop and that is what makes every brush stroke so exciting! She believes that “art is in the eye of the beholder” and therefore it does not matter in what form it comes, all should be appreciated.
